What Composite Bonding Actually Does

Composite bonding is a cosmetic treatment. Your dentist applies a tooth-coloured resin to the tooth and shapes it so the tooth looks more even. The material is hardened and polished during the appointment.

It works especially well when you’ve got a small chip or a gap that bothers you. Maybe one tooth looks shorter than the others. Maybe the edge has become uneven. Bonding gives the dentist something to work with because the natural tooth is still there.

Bonding Is Usually the Simpler Option

• A chipped front tooth is a classic bonding job, especially when the damage is fairly small.

• The appointment feels relatively quick, and you’ll usually leave with the tooth looking different that same day.

• It isn’t permanent in the same way an implant is, though. Bonding can wear down or chip and may need attention later.

What Dental Implants Do Differently

An implant uses a post placed into the jawbone to replace the missing tooth root. After the area heals, a dental crown is attached on top. Because the replacement is anchored into the jaw, it functions much more like a natural tooth than a cosmetic layer placed over an existing one.

And that means the process takes longer. There is healing involved, so you don’t simply walk in and walk out with the finished replacement.

Which Treatment Fits Your Situation?

Look at the starting point. If the tooth is present and mainly needs a cosmetic repair, bonding is the treatment to discuss. If the tooth is gone, an implant is designed for that problem.

There’s another important difference. Bonding doesn’t replace a tooth root or rebuild the support underneath a missing tooth. An implant does, which is why it involves a much more involved treatment process.

Cost matters too, but it shouldn’t be the first thing you compare. Choosing bonding simply because it seems easier doesn’t make sense if the tooth is missing. Likewise, an implant is unnecessary for a tiny cosmetic chip when the natural tooth is otherwise healthy.
