What Composite Bonding Actually Does

Composite bonding is mainly about changing the appearance or shape of a tooth. The dentist applies composite resin directly to the tooth and shapes it before hardening it with a special light. A chipped front tooth is a classic example.

It can also close a small gap or make a short tooth look more even. And because the dentist is adding material rather than filling a cavity, the approach is usually quite conservative.

Bonding Is More About Shape

Think of bonding as adding a little bit to the tooth. The dentist can build up an edge that has worn down or reshape an area that looks uneven. You still have your natural tooth underneath.

Where a White Filling Fits In

A white filling has a different job. It repairs a tooth after decay has damaged it. The dentist removes the decayed part first, then fills the space with tooth-coloured composite.

• A cavity is the main reason for a white filling, and the material replaces the part affected by decay.

• Small chips on visible teeth are often a bonding situation, especially when the tooth itself is otherwise healthy.

• Appearance matters with both treatments. Still, bonding usually gives the dentist more freedom to change the tooth’s shape.

Which One Do You Need?

It really comes down to what’s happening with your tooth. If you’ve got a tiny chip from biting your fork at lunch, that’s a very different situation from having a cavity that has been quietly getting bigger.

The treatment felt quick because there wasn’t a cavity to remove. That matters.

What About Durability?

Bonding is also more exposed when it sits on the edge of a front tooth. A filling inside a back tooth has a different job and faces different forces when you chew.

So don’t choose based on the material alone. The location of the tooth and the reason for treatment matter more.
