Why Composite Looks Natural
Composite resin is tooth-coloured so your dentist can shape and shade Composite to blend with surrounding enamel. Once polished you generally stop noticing the area.
Amalgam is different. Amalgam has a silver‑grey appearance that stands out against teeth. That’s fine when the main goal is restoring a damaged back tooth. Amalgam isn’t my first choice for a visible cosmetic repair.
Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference
Composite bonding works well when a tooth has a small cosmetic defect. The dentist adds resin directly to the tooth. Builds the shape gradually. Because Composite is bonded to the tooth only limited preparation is often needed.
• A chipped front tooth can be reshaped with Composite though the final result depends on how much healthy tooth remains.
• Uneven edges are a good fit for bonding because Composite can be sculpted quite precisely.
• Discolouration is trickier. Composite can cover some colour changes. Deep staining may need a different cosmetic approach.
Where Amalgam Still Has a Place
Amalgam has been used for years because Amalgam is strong and well suited to restoring teeth that take heavy chewing pressure. For a cavity in a back tooth that strength can matter more than appearance.
Cosmetic dental problems are a different conversation. If Amalgam is used to repair something that shows when you smile the grey colour becomes a downside.
What About Durability?
Composite is not indestructible. Composite can. Wear, especially if you bite hard objects or regularly grind your teeth. Amalgam generally handles chewing well but that does not automatically make Amalgam the better choice for a visible tooth.
Which One Makes Sense for Cosmetic Problems?
If the issue is visible and about appearance Composite bonding wins for me. Composite looks closer to enamel allows precise shaping and usually preserves more of the original tooth.
Amalgam still has a role, especially where strength and function’re the bigger concern.. Using a silver‑coloured filling for a small cosmetic defect, on a visible tooth feels like solving the wrong problem.
