A tooth that is completely missing changes the conversation. Bonding and Amalgam fillings are both used to repair teeth but neither one replaces a whole tooth that has disappeared. So if you look at a gap. Wonder which filling material should go in there pause for a second.

What Composite Bonding Can Actually Do

Composite Resin is tooth-coloured. Is shaped directly onto the tooth. Composite Bonding sticks to the remaining tooth structure, which makes it useful when there is still tooth left to work with. A dentist can use Composite Bonding to reshape an edge or close a very small space.

A completely empty gap is different. There is nothing there for Composite Bonding to stick to. Trying to build a missing tooth from Composite Bonding material is not a sensible long‑term fix because the material is not designed to handle the same forces as a natural tooth root and crown together.

When Composite Bonding Makes More Sense

• A small missing section, near the front is where Composite Bonding really earns its place.

• The natural colour is an advantage. You stop noticing the repair once it blends in properly.

• For a gap Composite Bonding can be a neat cosmetic fix though the dentist still needs to check the bite before deciding it is suitable.

Why Amalgam Isn’t a Replacement for a Tooth

Amalgam has a long history in dentistry because it is tough and works well for certain cavities.. Amalgam is designed to fill a prepared space inside a tooth that still exists.

So if a tooth is completely missing putting Amalgam into the gap does not solve the problem. There is no tooth structure around the gap to support Amalgam in the way a filling needs.

What Happens If a Tooth Is Completely Missing?

This is where treatment goes beyond fillings. Depending on the mouth and on the condition of the surrounding teeth a dentist may discuss an implant, a bridge or a removable denture.

Each works differently. A dental implant replaces the missing tooth’s root well as supports a replacement crown. A bridge uses neighbouring teeth for support. A denture fills the space without being fixed in the same way.

So Which One Should You Choose?

If a tooth is completely missing do not think of Composite Bonding versus Amalgam, as the choice. Neither Composite Bonding nor Amalgam is designed for that job.

If a tooth still has most of its structure and only part is missing Composite Bonding is usually the option that I favour for an area. Composite Bonding looks better. Keeps the simple feel of a small repair.
