Composite Bonding Keeps More of Your Tooth

Bonding is pretty straightforward. A dentist applies resin to the tooth shapes it and hardens it with a special light. The material can cover a chip. Fill a small gap. It can also change the shape of a tooth that looks uneven.

Because bonding usually needs little tooth removal the process feels fairly light. That is a reason I would pick bonding for a minor cosmetic fix rather than jumping straight to a crown.

When Bonding Fits

• A small chip is the case, especially if the rest of the tooth feels solid.

• Small gaps can be closed with resin though the final shape needs to look natural than simply filling the space.

• For an uneven front tooth bonding can feel like a surprisingly simple change.

A Dental Cap Is a Repair

A dental cap covers the visible part of the tooth. A dentist reshapes the tooth first so the crown can fit over it properly. Once it is cemented in place the crown becomes the outer surface.

So this is where the conversation changes. A crown is generally used when a tooth needs protection because it has lost a significant amount of its structure. Large decay can be one reason. A tooth that has cracked or had root canal treatment can be another.

Why the Difference Matters

With bonding you are adding material. With a crown you are protecting a tooth by covering it. That makes a crown a bigger commitment but sometimes that is exactly what the tooth needs.

There is also a preference here. For a front tooth with a tiny cosmetic flaw I would not rush toward a crown. Removing tooth structure for a bigger restoration feels unnecessary when bonding can do the job.

What About Cost and Longevity?

Bonding is generally less expensive than a crown. It usually takes less time to complete.. Composite resin does not have the same strength as a crown. It can. Wear down particularly if you bite hard foods or grind your teeth.

Crowns tend to last when they are properly fitted and looked after. Still they are not indestructible. The tooth underneath still needs care.

So Which One Makes Sense?

• healthy tooth, with a small cosmetic flaw? Bonding is usually the route.

• A weakened tooth needs protection and that is where a crown comes into the picture.

• Bonding feels quicker because it usually involves preparation.
